Providenciales, Turks and Caicos — June 27, 2025 – The Turks and Caicos Islands are in mourning this week following the passing and funeral of the Hon. Henry Leon Wilson—a cherished statesman, law enforcement veteran, aviation champion, and beloved community figure. His death marks the end of a life of exceptional service and goodwill.
Mr. Wilson, born June 16, 1954, passed away on May 15, 2025. He served three terms in the Legislative Council (1976–1980, 1980–1984, 1988–1991) and was the youngest person ever elected at the time. He later joined the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force Band and enjoyed a long career in aviation and civil aviation leadership. In recognition of his achievements, the Salt Cay Airport was renamed the Henry Leon Wilson Airport during its reopening on October 30, 2020.
The Turks and Caicos Islands Airports Authority expressed deep sorrow, stating that Mr. Wilson’s name and legacy “symbolize his profound impact on the island and its people”. They also recalled his instrumental role during the airport’s extensive upgrades and reopening.
The Turks and Caicos Islands Government released a statement remembering Mr. Wilson as “a statesman of conviction and compassion…a beloved member of the police band and Anglican church.” They emphasized his dedication to public service, mentorship, music, and faith.
Meanwhile, the National Insurance Board, where he served as Chairman from 2000 to 2003, extended condolences to his family and quoted Matthew 5:4: “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.”
His official funeral took place at St. Monica’s Anglican Church in Providenciales, honoring his long-standing service and devotion to faith, family, and country.
A poignant moment came during a memorial concert co-hosted by the Royal TCI Police Force Band and the TCI Brass Band. A local resident recalled exchanging warm greetings and laughter with Mr. Wilson over mutual passions—his trumpet and her camera—and quoted him offering encouragement during her political campaign: “You didn’t lose, you won…it took guts and courage.”
“He was an honest man, not afraid to speak his mind…serving his church with dignity,” she wrote. “His legacy will live on.”
Mr. Wilson is survived by his children—Linval, Lorlean, and Leanna—who were named in the Airports Authority’s condolence message. His impact as a public servant, musician, mentor, and devout Christian endures in the community, reminding the Islands of the power of faith, service, and joyful leadership.
