Providenciales, Turks and Caicos — June 28, 2025 – Residents and servicemen across the Turks and Caicos Islands gathered today to honour Armed Forces Day—a global tribute to military service that dates back to 2006 in the United Kingdom, evolving from “Veterans’ Day” and commemorated annually on the last Saturday in June.

Historically, the UK’s Armed Forces Day was established to recognize the contributions of both current and former service members. It marked the anniversary of the first Victoria Cross investiture in 1857 and was renamed in 2009 to expand its reach. Today, it brings communities together internationally through parades, ceremonies, and moments of gratitude.

In the Turks and Caicos Islands, Governor Her Excellency attended a special service at St. Monica’s Anglican Church to honour the TCI Regiment and those who serve. The Governor praised the Regiment’s expanding role, especially its integration with law enforcement via Operation Mightier, and underscored its improved training and maritime capabilities as essential to safeguarding against illegal activity and responding to natural disasters.

“The commitment of those in uniform reminds us that nation‑building is not a passive act—it demands sacrifice, unity, and the will to protect and uplift others,” she said.

Reverend Desirée Johnson, delivering the church message, emphasized that the Regiment’s uniform is more than protective gear—it symbolizes a divine calling to act with integrity and strength.

Now in its fifth year, the Turks and Caicos Islands Regiment has quickly grown into a professional force, respected for its dedication to the safety and resilience of the Islands.

Armed Forces Day in the TCI carries particular weight—being a British Overseas Territory, the celebration underscores local commitment to security, service, and regional partnerships. And with the country’s strategic geographic position, the Governor’s praise of enhanced maritime readiness hits at the heart of both national and environmental defense.

“This is about more than ceremony,” said the Governor. “It reflects our dedication to building a safer, stronger Turks and Caicos.”

Communities across the Islands joined in with civic gestures—flags raised, brief pauses in private and public life, and heartfelt thanks offered to military and police forces alike. As the day concluded, the spirit of unity and pride endured, exemplified in both church pews and coastal watchposts.

The observance of Armed Forces Day confirms the Islands’ appreciation for those who stand ready in service—across seas, skies, and disasters—but most importantly, among their own people.
