May, 23, 2025 – As Haiti grapples with surging violence and displacement, the United Nations and its humanitarian partners are stepping up efforts to protect vulnerable populations—especially children—by distributing over 745 dignity kits across high-risk areas.
These kits, which include essential hygiene supplies and items to help restore a sense of personal dignity, are being provided to women and girls living in displacement camps where the threat of sexual violence is alarmingly high.
The intervention comes amid a deepening crisis. Armed violence and lawlessness have displaced thousands, with children making up more than half of all internally displaced people. The International Organization for Migration estimates that one in eight children in Haiti is now displaced, facing daily risks of abuse, exploitation, and forced recruitment by armed gangs.
UNICEF has reported a 1,000% spike in sexual violence against children over the past year. The recent rape and murder of a six-year-old girl in a displacement camp in Cité Soleil has shocked the international community and highlighted the urgency of protective action.
Despite intensified humanitarian efforts—including psychosocial support, mobile health services, and legal aid—only 5% of the $11 million needed for gender-based violence response has been funded. UN agencies are urgently calling for more resources to expand life-saving services and uphold the dignity of Haiti’s most at-risk populations.
