Grand Turk Man Sentenced to 12 Years on Gun Conviction

Turks and Caicos Islands – Friday, November 29, 2024 – Shaquant Robinson, 24, was sentenced to 12 years’ imprisonment after being found guilty of firearm and ammunition charges in the Supreme Court. The trial was heard by Acting Justice Jeremy Donne KC over six days, from November 12–14 and November 18–20, 2024.

Trial and Representation

Robinson, represented by Mrs. Kimone Tennant of Baycourt Law Firm, faced charges stemming from a May 10, 2023, incident. Public Prosecutor Ms. Alima Alexis appeared on behalf of the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (ODPP).

Justice Donne handed down the 12-year sentence immediately following the guilty verdict, underscoring the seriousness of firearm-related offenses in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Incident Background

The charges against Robinson originated from an incident on May 10, 2023. According to a police report from the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force (RTCIPF), officers in Grand Turk responded to multiple reports of an armed man in the Overback area, near Annette’s Restaurant.

Police alleged that Robinson was brandishing and discharging a firearm in the vicinity. Officers arrived at the scene, apprehended the suspect, and recovered a firearm and ammunition during a search.

Robinson was arrested and subsequently charged with:

  • Unlawful Possession of a Firearm
  • Unlawful Possession of Ammunition
  • Discharging a Firearm
