#TheBahamas, July 30, 2024 – The Bahamian Government is moving to establish a cannabis industry through the Bahamas Cannabis Authority, that will expand “entrepreneurial opportunities for our people” and create jobs, according to Minister of Agriculture and Marine Resources, Jomo C. Campbell.

Speaking in the National Assembly, on the Cannabis Bill 2024, the Minister said the policy is carefully crafted, and in Part 3, Section 18 (1-4) it sets forth the criteria necessary for persons applying for licenses under the Act.

“They must be at least 21 years of old and have not been convicted of any offence under the Dangerous Drugs Act, the Proceeds of Crime Act, the Criminal Justice (International Co-operation Act) or the Cannabis Act,” the Minister said.

Adding that the administration has sought to ensure the “proper management” of the industry that will be created with the enactment of the legislation, he said it is envisioned that the Cannabis industry in The Bahamas will be overseen by the Authority.

“The mandated functions of the Authority are set out in Section 6 (2) of the bill. The functions are intended to keep a tight rein on the industry and provide the necessary education and training for persons within the industry, and the public. During the process of this and other bills coming to this place and public discourse on the subject, there is a need for extensive public awareness and specialty training,” he stated.

The Minister said accurate and up to date information must be circulated within the public domain, and it will be especially necessary for licensees and medical professionals to ensure that they properly grow, transport, and distribute Cannabis.

Importantly, the Authority is mandated to develop quality, safety, proficiency in testing, training and certification standards and specifications for observance by licensees or other persons involved in the industry in consultation with the Director of the Bureau of Standards.
