Minister Bartlett Welcomes New Attraction in Ocho Rios

#MontegoBay, Jamaica, June 24, 2024 – Minister of Tourism, Hon. Edmund Bartlett, has welcomed the opening of the Poko Loko floating bar in Ocho Rios, St. Ann, noting that the new attraction has the potential to redefine the tourism landscape in the resort town.

The facility, which represents an investment of US$1million by its operators, spans 6,000 square feet and is designed to offer an unparalleled experience on the water.

Speaking at the official opening ceremony on June 16, Minister Bartlett said Poko Loko has the potential to attract locals and visitors who are looking for more diverse and adventurous experiences.

“For us, this is what tourism is about. It’s about people wanting new experiences. We are excited about enabling more of these kinds of activities to happen, because it drives more visitors to Jamaica,” he said.

Minister Bartlett noted that the project has already generated employment for 65 Jamaicans, with plans to expand the workforce by an additional 10 employees in the coming weeks.

“The investment in Poko Loko not only enriches the local economy, but also underscores a commitment to community development and sustainable growth,” he pointed out.

Owner, Anthony Warren, in his remarks, said the attraction would be targetting a diverse range of patrons, including cruise passengers, hotel guests and locals.

He said the facility will operate on a reservation-only basis, to manage capacity, prevent overcrowding and maintain a high standard of service.

Mr. Warren emphasised that safety remains a top priority for Poko Loko, reflecting a “steadfast dedication” to providing a secure environment for all visitors.

For his part, Mayor of St. Ann’s Bay and Councillor for the Ocho Rios Division, Michael Belnavis, said the attraction is “a significant and exciting” addition to Jamaica’s tourism product, with a keen focus on environmental sustainability.

“The attraction has successfully addressed all concerns related to its ecological impact, positioning itself as a responsible and eco-conscious destination. Poko Loko is poised to enhance the allure of Ocho Rios as a premier tourist destination, drawing visitors from far and wide to experience its unique charm and hospitality,” he stated.

Executive Director of Jamaica Vacations (JAMVAC), Joy Roberts, said the unveiling of Poko Loko represents a bold step forward in the evolution of the local tourism industry, “showcasing innovation, creativity and a deep appreciation for the natural beauty of the island.”

“As guests embark on this unforgettable journey aboard the floating bar, they are invited to immerse themselves in the captivating ambiance of Ocho Rios Bay, savouring the sights and sounds that make this destination truly exceptional,” she added.
