World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD) is observed globally on March 21st each year. The day serves to raise awareness about Down Syndrome and to promote the rights, inclusion and well-being of people with Down Syndrome.

Down syndrome is a genetic condition caused by the presence of an extra chromosome 21 (trisomy 21). This additional genetic material affects a person’s physical and cognitive development, leading to characteristic features such as distinct facial appearance, intellectual disability, and potential health challenges such as heart defects, hearing loss, and thyroid disorders. However, the severity of these effects can vary widely among individuals with Down Syndrome.

Dr. Anya Malcom, Director of the Special Education Needs Unit explained, “The history of World Down Syndrome Day traces back to 2006 when the United Nations General Assembly declared March 21st as World Down Syndrome Day, recognizing it as an opportunity to promote public awareness and understanding of Down Syndrome. The date, March 21st (3/21), was chosen to symbolize the triplication of the 21st chromosome that causes Down Syndrome.”

Since its establishment, World Down Syndrome Day has grown in significance, with various organizations, advocacy groups, and individuals worldwide organizing events, campaigns and activities to celebrate the abilities and accomplishments of individuals with Down Syndrome. These efforts aim to foster greater inclusivity, acceptance and opportunities for people with Down Syndrome in society.

According to the Minister responsible for Education, “By wearing colourful socks, we are joining a global movement to celebrate the uniqueness and abilities of people with Down syndrome. This simple gesture is a powerful way to show support, raise awareness, and promote inclusivity for individuals with Down Syndrome.’

Join us this year in spreading joy, acceptance, and love by wearing your brightest, most colourful socks on March 21st. Together, we can create a world where everyone is accepted and celebrated for who they are.

Please post and share pictures of your departments in their bright and beautiful socks!
