Counterfeit documents reiterate need for new ID says TCI Premier

#TurksandCaicos, October 23, 2023 – The issue of counterfeit documents in the Turks and Caicos is only one of the reasons the country desperately needs residents to get their new comprehensive National IDs according to Washington Misick TCI Premier

“Right now the extent to which counterfeits are taking place in this country is phenomenal. Of course, we know where it’s happening mostly,” the Premier said during an interview with Robert Hall on  Expressions aired by RTC FM.

“That is why we are working on a National ID that will follow you from cradle to grave. From the minute you land on this island and can get a work permit you will need to have that unique identifier.” He maintained.

Counterfeit documentation has affected the medical system, immigration system, and more in the Turks and Caicos islands for years on end.

“It’s a disgrace to the extent at which we are being shafted because of counterfeiting.” Misick reiterated

The Digital National ID system with biometrics is touted as a fix to the counterfeit problem among other issues like illegal immigration but has been plagued with delays. The project, which was a campaign promise of the Progressive National Party has not yet materialized more than two and a half years into the government’s tenure.
