Governor Announces TCI to Host Parliamentary Speakers’ Conference

#TurksandCaicos, September 29, 2023 – The Turks and Caicos Islands will host the 2024 Overseas Territories Speakers’ Conference next Spring, according to Dileeni Daniel Selvaratnam, TCI Governor who made the announcement recently after a visit from members of the Office of the UK Speaker of the House of Commons.

We are told  David Clark and Tara Jane Kerpens Lee arrived in the country in mid-September to assist with the event preparations.

Next year Lindsay Hoyle, UK Speaker of the House will travel to the TCI joining other Speakers, Parliamentary Clerks, and constitutional experts from the 14 Overseas Territories as they ‘examine key tenets of strong legislatures and effective Parliamentary democracy.’

It is a fairly new annual meeting, started in 2022.

The Turks and Caicos will only be the third country to host after the UK (2022) and Anguilla (2023).

Priorities for the series of conferences include outfitting all OTs with a dedicated parliamentary building and the provision of impact assessments from any bill laid before Parliament that will affect the Overseas Territories.
