#TurksandCaicos, April 27, 2023 – The fourth (4th) Thursday in April is recognized worldwide as International Girls in Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Day. The day is celebrated to stress the importance of girls in ICT and to encourage more girls and young women to pursue science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers.

It is projected that ninety percent (90%) of future jobs will require digital skills. However, women and girls still need to be included: women are sixteen percent (16%) less likely than men to use mobile internet across low- and middle-income countries and women currently hold less than twenty percent (20%) of tech jobs.  For girls to take their rightful place in these dynamic fields, they must acquire skills to become both ICT users and creators in the digital world.

With this in mind, the Department of Gender Affairs within the Ministry of Home Affairs, Transportation, Broadcasting, Energy and Utilities, and the Telecommunications Commission will join the rest of the world in celebrating International Girls in ICT Day on Thursday, April 27, 2023 under the theme “Digital Skills for Life”. This aims to empower and encourage young women to pursue careers in Information and Communication Technologies.

In observance of the day, the Department will host a series of educational forumson Grand Turk and Providenciales within the public and private high schools and a country-wide essay competition.

The schedule for the forums is as follows:

o April 26, Grand Turk – H.J. Robinson High School

o April 27, Providenciales, – Clement Howell High School

o April 27-Providenciales – Maranatha Academy

o April 28, Providenciales – Long Bay High School

The Department encourages all schools to have their students participate in the essay competition to contend for the top prizes. Rules and details can be found on the competition flyer.

Let us work to increase the enrolment rate of girls from Turks and Caicos in the field of ICT, not only at our Community College but around the world. Let us continue to empower them by ensuring they have the necessary skills, confidence, and support to achieve their goals.
