#TurksandCaicos, March 9, 2023 – Inmates and Prison officers were side by side in the Grand Turk Prison Kitchen recently as they impressed visitors in their TVET final exams.  The group of seven took part in final exams, the culmination of their participation in TVET courses made available by the Memorandum of Understanding between the Turks and Caicos Islands Community College, Department of Corrections (formerly the HM Prison in Grand Turk) and HJ Robinson High School.

Updates shared via the government’s official Facebook page showed the students, four prison officers, two inmates and a member of the community, all decked out in crisp white aprons and smart black pants and toques (chef hats) to take their February 24th Food Preparation exams.

All students studied for a total of six months before they were tested and to truly provide them with the best facilities, TCIG says the kitchen was ‘transformed into a state-of-the-art facility to accommodate students, tutors and offsite invigilators.’

Those who witnessed the event describe the students’ work as ‘of the highest quality.’

It is part of the Government’s push to bring true to life opportunities for a greater likelihood of lasting rehabilitation once offenders are done serving time.
