#TheBahamas, November 18, 2022 – The Minister of National Security in The Bahamas, Wayne Munroe, is calling for intervention programs to start earlier in the country to help curb the issue of crime. He said this as he recalled a fifteen-year-old who was, this summer, charged with murder.
Starting next week, the Ministry of National Security will host a set of intervention programs for the youth in the fight against crime, and the programs will now include primary schools.
The director of the organization: Family of all Murder Victims, Khandi Gibson, added that many children are exposed to violence at home, therefore, no child must be left out of the programs. Gibson noted that “hurting people, hurt people” and as such, the seminars and symposiums held by the government should also include families of murder victims to help with their trauma.
Munroe said his duty is to provide the resources necessary to catch criminals, and to date, he is satisfied with the apprehension rate. The aim is to recruit at least two classes of officers yearly and equip them with vehicles and other resources to execute their role.
These initiatives, including the intervention programs, come as the most recent double shooting that took place on Tuesday night in Fox Hill brought the count to 118, just one homicide away from 2021’s 119 murder count.
Munroe said the police will continue to conduct patrols and other operations to “crackdown on crime.”
