#TurksandCaicos, August 28, 2022 – A major scholarship opportunity is in the works for Turks and Caicos Islanders, thanks to former Premier Rufus Ewing.

Premier Washington Misick revealed on Thursday that he had the opportunity to speak with the Chairperson of the Fulbright Scholarship, who had in turn connected them to Fulbright in the UK.

“We are looking at tapping into the Fulbright Scholarship Program, so that Turks and Caicos Islands students, researchers, and other people with other interests can have the opportunity to tap into the scholarship.”

He explained that the opportunity was thanks to a contact Dr. Ewing had within the Washington chapter of the organization.

One of the most prestigious scholarships in the world, the Fulbright Scholarship is awarded to 8,000 graduate students annually. Operating in over 160 countries worldwide, it allows international students to study for a Master’s or Doctorate in America, usually on the condition that they return to enrich their home country.

The Premier will be meeting with Fulbright UK at the Joint Ministerial Committee in November, but that was not all.

Ewing also arranged a meeting and accompanied the Premier to Howard University, to give support as Premier Misick and Rachel Taylor, Education Minister, made their case to create a stronger partnership with the university.

He also facilitated the furthering of the TCI brand in Washington, by giving the TCI Tourist Board and Hotel and Tourism Association a platform to speak with potential investors at the Premier’s Classic, a golf tournament sponsoring the Youth Help foundation. The foundation is a US Charity with TCI ties as it was set up by Ewing’s son Stuart Ewing.

The premier described the evening as being extremely productive.

“We want to thank Dr. Ewing and his family for actually helping to raise the profile of our Turks and Caicos Islands in the Washington area, and at the same time doing a lot of good work setting up the foundation,” Misick said.
