TCI Community College Lauds Commendable TVET PLAR Assessment Results

#TurksandCaicos, June 14, 2022 – The Turks and Caicos Islands Community College TVET Institute have received the results from its inaugural cohort of participants which sat the Caribbean Vocational Qualification (CVQ) Challenge Exam in February 2022.

WHAT IS PLAR?

The Prior Learning Assessment Recognition (PLAR) is a certification pathway where experienced individuals in their respective fields are given the opportunity to obtain certification by producing stipulated evidence in the form of a portfolio or project as well as sitting a challenge exam.

Of the twenty-seven (27) participants that sat the PLAR Challenge Exam, twenty-three (23) were deemed fully competent in both the theory and practical aspects of the exam. This pass rate of 85% is indeed a celebratory occasion not only for TVET@TCICC but for the participants who worked assiduously to ensure their performances were aligned to the occupational standard and examination requirements of the National Council of Technical Vocational Education and Training (NCTVET) in Jamaica with whom the TVET@TCICC has an ongoing partnership.

The pass rate for each skill area is as follows:

  • Level 1 Electrical installation – 72%
  • Level 1 Customer Service – 90%
  • Level 1 Commercial Food Preparation – 100%
  • Level 2 Food and Beverage (Bartending) – 100%

Each participant is now eligible to receive their CVQ certificate from the accrediting body NCTVET under the HEART Trust NSTA.

The Caribbean Primary Exit Assessment (CPEA) Results

#TurksandCaicos, June 28, 2022 – The Ministry of Education, Labour, Employment and Customer Services extends sincere congratulations to all primary school students from both Government and Private primary school who were successful in the 2022 Caribbean Primary Exit Assessment (CPEA).  The Ministry encourages all the students  to continue doing their best to achieve academic and personal excellence as they transition to high school.The Minister of Education, the Honourable Rachel Marshall Taylor stated, “I am immensely proud of the performance of our children in the recent sitting of the CPEA.  I congratulate each of you because, despite the challenges we faced during the last two years, you’ve done well.  We are creating an environment to enable your success. You must be willing to work hard if it is your desire to be successful.  I wish you well in your journey through  high school.”

The Caribbean Primary Exit Assessment was administered by the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC), to students completing Grade 6 throughout the Turks and Caicos Islands on May 12 and 13, 2022.

A total of four hundred and sixty (460) candidates were entered for the assessment in Language, Mathematics, Social Studies and Science. Of the 460 candidates; Fifteen (15) withdrew and eighteen (18) candidates were absent during the administration of the assessment. Therefore, four hundred and twenty-seven (427) students were assessed.

The assessment scores represent a combination of the internal (School-Based Assessment) assessment and the external assessment which consisted of multiple-choice items assessing literacies in the four subject areas. Each paper carried a maximum of 75 marks for an overall total of 300 marks. The internal assessment carried a total of 200 marks.

Based on the Caribbean Primary Exit Assessment scoring, the following results are reported:

–         Developing Competence: 0-40%

–         Competent: 41-80%

–         Advanced Competence: 81-100%

For country-specific purposes the scoring has been modified as follows:

–         Developing Competence: 0-40%

–         Near Competence: 41-60%

–         Competent: 61-80%

–         Advanced Competence: 81-100%

Of the four hundred and twenty-seven (427) candidates who were assessed, twenty-six (26) or 6.08% are developing competence; one hundred and seventy-five (175) or 40.98% are near competence; two hundred and one (201) or 47.07% are competent, and twenty-five (25) or 5.85% demonstrated advanced competence.

Fifty-four percent (52.92%) of the candidates who sat the assessment scored grades in the range 61-100% demonstrating Competence or Advanced Competence in the literacies that students should acquire on completing primary school.  When the candidates who demonstrated Near Competence are added, the overall pass rate for the country is 93.9% representing 401 candidates

While the Covid-19 pandemic and the resultant move to virtual teaching and learning have no doubt impacted the candidates, the performance of the cohort is commendable.

Analysis by School

Sixteen primary schools (9 public and 7 private) entered candidates for the CPEA . Nine (9) schools have candidates who demonstrated Near Competence, Competence or Advanced Competence. Eleven of the sixteen schools have one or more candidates who demonstrated Advanced Competence.

A’Navia Mantock of the Ona Glinton Primary School and Vivian Parker of the Provo Christian School have both demonstrated Advanced Competence scoring 450 marks out of the possible 500 marks.

TCI Agriculture launches Plant Clinic

#TurksandCaicos, June 25, 2022 – These days anything can be online, even a plant clinic! The Turks and Caicos Islands Department of Agriculture wants to help budding and experienced farmers with any plant issues they may have and their new Online Plant Clinic is their solution to help as many Islanders as possible.

Launched on Thursday, June 16 the clinic will operate through Facebook. Individuals with sick plants or pest issues will be required to take a photo of the issue and upload that photo to the department of Agriculture’s Facebook page.

Answers to issues will be given once a month, on every third Thursday, via a public video so all Islanders can have access. The launch was attended by Chief Plant Protection Officer-CPPO Roneta Huntley Thomas, Director of Agriculture Wilhelmina Kissoonsingh, Minister of Agriculture Josephine Connolly, and Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture Mrs. Cheryl Ann Jones.

Connolly urged residents to “grow your own food and grow TCI.”

Attendees of the launch were allowed to participate in games trying to identify different diseases for a chance at prizes. Residents can now immediately start sending in their photos on the Facebook page.

TCI Hospital Announces Educational Summer Programmes for 2022

#TurksandCaicos, June 25, 2022 – InterHealth Canada – Turks and Caicos Islands Hospital announce its annual educational summer Ready and Clinic Observership programmes which are scheduled to run in July 2022. Both programmes intend to raise awareness of healthcare careers and to help improve local capacity in the long term.

The Ready observership program offers third-form high schools, both public and private students, a behind-the-scenes look and in-depth knowledge about professions in health care delivered over five days. The program commences on Monday, July 11th to July 15th, 2022, with health care workers’ feature practical and theory presentations.

The Clinic Exploration program targets students pursuing healthcare-related courses at a tertiary level institution and ordinarily resides in the Turks and Caicos Islands. The 10-day program, from July 18th to July 29th, 2022, comprises onsite sessions that include a skills lab on phlebotomy, suturing, vital signs, manual handling, applying splints, and Heart Saver, and Basic Life Support training. A 20- minute presentation is required for participants at the conclusion of the programme.

Our summer programme offers youngsters a great opportunity to gain meaningful experience in a Hospital setting”, said Acting Chief of Medical Services Dr. Sani Amatti.

An opportunity to explore career opportunities in health and medicine. Participants will gain both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. They will engage with physicians and other healthcare associates from various medical disciplines within the organization while learning about the everyday aspects of their speciality areas”, added Dr Amatti.

Chief Executive Officer of the TCI Hospital, Dr Denise Braithwaite-Tennant, stated, “For the past nine years except for 2020 because of COVID-19, we have always looked forward to hosting a group of talented young people who are interested in the plethora of fields in health and medicine. We want to mentor our young people and motivate them to be innovative, creative, empathetic and caring, think critically, and be passionate while elevating their awareness about careers within the hospital. Human capital is the most important asset for healthcare and there remains a global shortage further exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. During the COVID-19 pandemic similar to other hospitals, we have faced significant challenges recruiting health care workers, especially nurses. The World Health Organization estimates a projected shortfall of 18 million health workers by 2030, mostly in low- and lower-middle-income countries. It is therefore imperative that we continue to intentionally create opportunities for our young people to engage with us and promote careers in health care”.

The Turks and Caicos Islands Hospital is accredited and became a licensed teaching facility on July 26th, 2021.
