#TurksandCaicos, May 27, 2022 – The Finance Minister explained the ‘Role of the Government in Creating an Enabling Environment for investment. Saunders explained that the Government had quite a significant role to play in facilitating investment in the Turks and Caicos especially around domestic investments.
Setting the vision for investment in the islands was paramount, he explained, referencing the vision 2040 document which lays out the TCIs aspirations for the next two decades.
“The vision is to deliver on what you want,” he explained, noting that according to vision 2040
“The Turks and Caicos Islands will be a global leader in levels of prosperity and human development.”
To achieve the vision he said the government has three major priorities, Human Capital Development, Social Development and Environmental Development and Saunders says actionable plans were being put in place to ensure these goals were met. Those plans include:
expanding on the TCIs competitive advantage in tourism
Expanding tourist capacity onto the family islands
Expanding access to appropriate financing
Stimulating investments in renewable energy
Increased investment in affordable housing in the islands
Stimulating investments in primary healthcare and food security
Investing towards the TCI being litter free
Investing in better telecommunications infrastructure with the introduction of new competitors to the industry and more fiber optic cables.
Stimulate Investment in the local financial services industry
Improvements in all these areas were key to achieving vision 2040 and making life for Turks and Caicos Islanders as smooth as possible.
The finance minister mentioned making government processes easier for people in the family islands as well as banking processes noting that no islanders should be getting on a plane to do government business.
Additionally Deputy Premier, E Jay Saunders reiterated the plan to build the country’s economy up to $500 million in revenues insisting that if achieved, the benefits for residents would be exponential.
