#TurksandCaicos, July 17, 2021 – A Basketball Camp is coming to Turks and Caicos Islands beginning on August 3rd to 7th 2021: The organizer, Professor Gilbert Morris (the former Chairman of TC Invest (Now Invest TC), says: “The camp is aimed at engaging the young people of Turks and Caicos Islands in an activity that brings them together as a community around sport.”

The camp will be held at the Gustavus Lightbourne gym in Providenciale, its free for the children of TCI and will feature current and former NBA Players. Camp organisers are partnered with Jeff Rodgers of the Bahamas (who has run Basketball camps with NBA players for 32 years), and the TCI Basketball Federation (TCIBF), with the generous support of the Sports Commission .

Professor Morris said of the camp: “I have always imagined that given the size of our youth population and given our relative wealth, the children of Turks and Caicos Islands should be the most engaged young people of any country in the world”. Morris – who was also Chairman of the Resorts Economic Council (TCREC) – added: “This event is focused on our children, but we are making a documentary of the event, that will feature our sponsors – who have been so generous – and will feature our beautiful by nature islands. When one has the attention of NBA players, Coaches, Agents etc., one must make the most of it, since they are in the target audience of our clients, customers and guests”.

Registration of the event is online at the Camp website www.tcibasketballcamp.com at the email: info@tcibasketballcamp.com. Additional registration will be available on paper forms at the Gustavus Lightbourne Gym and retail locations in Providenciales. While the camp is FREE, participants will need a rapid Covid test or be fully vaccinated and Covid Protocols will be observed.

The camp will also include 8 current and former players, and Coaches and Referee training by officials and coaches with NBA experience. We have reserved additional gym space for this and this will allow over 18 year old (and weekend athletes) to participate in Scrimmages.

The highlight of the camp is likely to be the August 5th Thursday night “All Star game”, with mixed teams of NBA current and former players and local players. A Special Guest for the camp will be: Drederick Irving – the father of Kyrie Irving – who is injured and could not make it.

Its not been decided whether an audience will be allowed for the game. Further announcements will be made in the coming days.
