#TurksandCaicos, April 7, 2021 – The Turks and Caicos Islands joins in recognizing one of the world’s oldest health awareness days -World Health Day on April 7.

On this World Health Day, the TCI Ministry of Health hosts a limited in-person body conditioning session for twenty (20) persons at the Graceway Sports Complex while simultaneously inviting residents to join in via live-stream Facebook participation.

The Ministry of Health is grateful for the partnership of Graceway Sports and Fitness guru, LaDonna Bassett who led the active session.

According to Mrs. Aldora Robinson Director of Health Promotion and AdvocacyUnit “now more than ever we need to help persons make better choices concerning Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD’s),overweight and obesity so that we can all experience better health. The exercise session is only one part of how we get there, especially in times of COVID-19.”

Commenting on World Health Day, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health, Agriculture, Sports and Human Services, the Honourable E. Jay Saunders said,“We are all looking forward to and hoping for a summer in which our daily lives are more like what they were before this pandemic, however; to get to that point we must maintain physical distancing, mask-wearing and observance of all the protocols in effect. As we listen to scientists and be guided by their recommendations, my Government will continue to ensure that we develop strong, resilient health systems, capable of fighting any health issue.”

To mark the establishment of The World Health Organization of April 7, 1948, a global health awareness day is celebrated each year on April 7 under the auspices of the World Health Organization. The first World Health Day was on April 7, 1950.

This year’s theme: “Building a fairer, healthier world” was inspired by the continuing COVID-19 pandemic.

The WHO is promoting four critical actions that it wants to see from governments and other groups involved in global health leadership:

  1. Working together
  2. Improve data collection, so we understand where to focus
  3. Identify and tackle the root cause of inequities
  4. Act beyond borders

The Ministry of Health is committed to ensuring that we all live healthier lives through its campaigns of public awareness, accessibility to the COVID-19 vaccination and ongoing testing. Join in and help us build a fairer, healthier world.
