BAHAMAS: Steven Gardiner and Shaunae Miller-Uibo Receive Top Honours at National Sports Awards

#Nassau, 30 November, 2019 – The Bahamas — Bahamian track and field stars Steven Gardiner and Shaunae Miller-Uibo won the Prime Minister’s Award for ‘Athlete of the Year’ at the 2019 Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture’s National Sports Awards, held November 22, 2019, at the Crown Ballroom of the Atlantis Resort, Paradise Island.

Among those present for the event included Minster of Youth, Sports and Culture the Hon. Lanisha Rolle; Speaker of the House of Assembly, the Hon. D. Halson Moultrie and Mrs. Moultrie; Senator the Hon. Jennifer Dotson; the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, David Cates; Under Secretary Montez Williams; Executive Director of Culture Rowena Poitier Sutherland; Director of Sports Timothy Munnings; other Ministry staff; and numerous sports participants, organization representatives, and stakeholders.

There were some 16 award categories for the evening, including: the Minister of Sports Excellence Achiever, Tourism Impact, the National Team of the Year, Federation of the Year, Collegiate Athlete of the Year, Community Sports, and the Male and Female Athlete of the Year with Disability.

Among the awardees were NBA Basketball standout Buddy Hield, who won the ‘Tourism Impact Award,’ and he won the Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture’s ‘Excellence Achiever Award’ with Mrs. Miller-Uibo.  Sprinter Terrence Jones won the ‘Future/Rising Star Award,’ Pan Am Games silver medalist Tynia Gaither won the (Bahamas) ‘Olympic Committee Award,’ and youth baseball coach and sports legend Fred “Papa” Smith won the ‘Community Sports Award.’
