Turks and Caicos Premier updates House of Assembly and Public on Brexit

#Providenciales, March 29, 2019 – Turks and Caicos – Premier Sharlene Robinson is watching UK Brexit talks and has labelled the situation ‘fluid’, with the one certainty being that there will be no British Exit of the European Union this Friday, March 29, 2019.

Already, the Theresa May Administration has secured an extension on the time for an ‘exit’ so that the United Kingdom can pass a ‘deal’ through parliament before it parts ways with the European Union.

The two key dates shared by Premier Robinson in the House of Assembly were:  May 22 and April 12. 

“The various possible options are as follows, further vote on the Prime Minister’s Deal – that’s one – following the agreement reached with the EU 27 on Thursday; the Speaker may consider there has been a substantial change and allow for a third vote on the Prime Minister’s deal.  If MPs vote again and accept the Prime Minister’s Deal, legislation will be introduced to bring it into effect on 22 May thus the UK will leave the EU on 22 May with a deal.”

House of Assembly Members were also debriefed by Premier Robinson on the Revoke Article 50 movement.  The action which seeks to recall the letter advising the EU of Britain’s decision to exit has attracted one million marchers to a demonstration in London and another 5.75 million have historically signed online petition.  The movement wants to reverse Brexit but is reportedly rejected by Government and will be debated on April 1 in the House of Commons.

Despite the unprecedented support of the Revoke Article 50 petition, a new referendum is unlikely to happen.

“However, there is not currently enough parliamentary support for a second referendum,” said Hon Sharlene Robinson.

The focus is on crafting a deal which meets majority approval by the first date of May 22 or seeking another extension on the second date of April 12.

“…on 20 March, MPs voted in a non-binding vote not to leave the EU without a deal. No deal remains a default position and if no other options are put forward could be the result on the 12^th of April.”

The Premier informed that a conference call which was scheduled for this week between Overseas Territory leaders and Lord Ahmad is postponed to next week, Thursday April 4, 2019.

Following the exchange with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office minister, Lord Tariq Ahmad, the Premier said there would be a further update to the Turks and Caicos Islands about Brexit.
