BAHAMAS: Hundreds of students praised for creative efforts
Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture, the Hon. Michael Pintard, was the keynote speaker who gave the students 11 points to live by: Be humble; don’t let others define you; be happy; enjoy the simple things in life; avoid things that create regret; live within their means; take responsibility for their actions; learn to submit to God’s guidance; learn how to forgive; control their response to people and situations; and finally, they should predetermine that they will succeed.
While giving this advice, the Minister held the students’ attention by giving examples of his mistakes and speaking to them in a manner they could not only appreciate, but understand.
This is the 10th year that the Templeton World Charity Foundation has held the competition, and is open to grades five through 12. Grand Bahama has the largest number of submissions, outside of New Providence, and for the first time the overall winner was from this island.
The Grand Bahama winners are as follows: First place senior division overall winner, K’Shura Hanna of Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Academy; fifth place junior division, Seannia Smith of Bishop Michael Eldon School; and third place in the video competition were Grace Turner, Lynique Greene and Samia Rampersaud of Bishop Michael Eldon School. Receiving honourable mention were: Camille Williams, Walter Parker Primary School; 
Also in attendance were: Mary Russell, District Education Officer; Marvin Rolle, District Education Officer; Ivan Butler, DS West Grand Bahama; Dr. Andrew Serazin, president, Templeton World Charity Foundation; Mena Griffiths, chairperson, Laws of Life Essay Competition; Yvonne Ward, DS East Grand Bahama; along with Templeton World Charity Foundation Laws of Life Bahamas Committee members Elma Garraway and Liesl Wright.
Students were represented from Freeport Primary School, Hugh Campbell Primary School, Walter Parker Primary School, Sunland Baptist Academy, St. Paul’s Methodist College, Sister Mary Patricia Russell Junior High School, Tabernacle Baptist Academy, St. George’s High School, Jack Hayward High School, Eight Mile Rock High School and Bishop Michael Eldon School.
