#TurksandCaicos, January 16, 2018 – Providenciales – There are a few Caribbean countries feeling bruised by the issuance of travel alerts which cast a dark cloud over their leading industry, tourism and the Turks and Caicos is among them.

Six days ago, the United States minced no words about how their citizens should behave while in the Turks and Caicos, and for some it is not surprising given a string of nationally appalling crimes involving visitors – including three guests to the country who were shot and injured.    “Increased Caution” the United States is calling the Travel Advisory issued on January 10, 2018 and it explains the reason for the dramatic change in how the Turks and Caicos is usually characterized.

The Advisory said:  “Violent crime, such as armed robbery, shootings, and home invasions, is common.   Police presence and emergency response are extremely limited.”

The Turks and Caicos Islands Police in late 2017 reported a downward spiral in crime still the US is cautioning its citizens with advice on how to stay safe in the UK overseas territory.   The advisory says, to “avoid walking alone and at night, do not answer your door at your hotel/residence unless you know who it is and do not physically resist any robbery attempt.”

The Year 2017 was most challenging for Turks and Caicos tourism – an uptick in crime against guests including armed offenses which drew international media attention and the double blow of hurricanes Irma and Maria.   Industry leaders and Government launched extraordinary media campaigns in an effort to control any lasting damage to the reputation of what is still one of the fastest growing and safest destinations in the Caribbean region.
