#Bahamas, November 22, 2017 – Nassau – The new colour for New Providence will be orange according to the Minister of Social Services & Urban Development who has partnered with the Zonta Club to make a visible statement against violence.    Minister Lanisha Rolle took to the streets with orange ribbons and Cable Beach and Pinewood Gardens were selected for the show of solidarity against violence against women.

The Minister said the actions are a demonstration and a call for everyone to say no to violence and this movement is a precursor to a greater one against all forms of violence in The Bahamas.    In a media report, Minister Rolle is quoted saying: “As minister, I intend to lead efforts to implement and execute a transformative agenda of programmes focused on the elimination all forms of violence.”

It was also explained by the Minister that a University of The Bahamas study showed that 58.1 per cent of male students and 32 per cent of female students felt that it is “okay for men to hit their women” and in some cases, “the women were to blame.”   Rolle said this culture of thinking is wrong and must be flushed out.

Next Tuesday, a Town Hall Meeting will happen at Jones Communications at 6:30pm; the public is invited to attend.    This weekend, Zonta is asking the public to participate in the “Walk in My Shoes” on Saturday at Arawak Cay from 10am – 6pm.   You can also donate lightly-worn used or new shoes from noon to 5pm as a part of the drive; those shoes will be donated to various charities.   Each shoe, says Zonta is symbolic of a stand against violence against women and children.
