#TurksandCaicos, August 24, 2017 – Providenciales – Women are being encouraged to bid for the consultation job of assessing what the Turks and Caicos will need to build the proper sea defenses for three vulnerable islands.    When the #CDB Loan was moved in the House of Assembly on Monday by Premier and Finance Minister, Sharlene Robinson and seconded by Deputy Premier Sean Astwood it was explained that the bidding process specifically calls for there to be a demonstration of gender equality which means, the job could go as easily to a woman as it could to a man.

“The objective this morning, Mr. Speaker, is to enhance the governments capability to protect and manage the Turks and Caicos Islands coastline.   These are climate resilient approaches which will incorporate social inclusiveness and gender equality principles.  We intend to achieve this through a preparation of a feasibility study.”

Leeward and Long Bay member of  Parliament, Akierra Misick endorsed the loan during the contribution stage and called on the, at least two, qualified women in the Turks and Caicos, of whom she is aware, to please try to win the job.

“Women if you’re listening, please bid when the time comes so we could ensure there’s gender equality in the consultation.”

The loan is not for any construction as yet, it is for a technical assistance study and the total investment for the study is $780,250 as revealed by Finance Minister Robinson.    CDB will contribute $441,000 while the remainder will come from the Turks and Caicos Islands Government and the European Investment Bank.

The terms of the loan were lauded too, interest at 3.3%, done in twenty payments to be made quarterly and with five years to pay, and an additional two years grace period if required for repayment of that loan.    The three islands to benefit from reinforced or new sea defenses are Grand Turk, Salt Cay and Providenciales.
