Bahamas, June 21st 2017: National Security Minister Marvin Dames says prevention is the answer to putting an end to the crime situation in Grand Bahama, and not just enforcement. Minister Dames notes while enforcement is important, it often comes too late and after the crime has taken place, while more prevention tactics are needed, especially when it comes to The Bahamas’ young people. He says the aim is part of a multifaceted approach to steer young men and women away from gun crimes and gang activity. Following a tour and meeting with the top cop in the area, Minister Dames, says the only way to get a “grip on serious and violent crimes” is to increase visibility and modernize the patrolling strategy by taking advantage of existing technology and the new “they are bringing to the forefront”.

The minister met with both senior and junior officers to hear their concerns, and get feedback on the best practices that would enable them to effectively carry out their job. Calling it a National strategy that we operate by”, Minister Dames says this “strategy permeates from New Providence, all the way to Grand Bahama and to all of the other islands”. The minister pledged his ministry’s support in bringing all law enforcement agencies at a level they can provide uninterrupted service to the communities of this country”.
