Lightning strike blamed for 5 hour power outage

Turks and Caicos, March 27, 2017 – Providenciales – An early morning thunderstorm from a quasi stationary cold front brought some unsettled weather into the TCI on Saturday morning; FortisTCI says it was a lightning strike from the bad weather that caused five islands to be without power.  The lightning struck at 6:42am in Provo at the main generation station on Leeward Highway, interrupted the Transmission System and left Provo, North and Middle Caicos, Pine and Parrot Cays without electricity.

FortisTCI in a notice to customers on Saturday explained that some people had their power restored by 9:50am, others by noon.  The nation’s power supplier thanked its teams working to investigate and restore electricity and the general public for its patience.

As for the front, it has finally moved away and the forecast calls for dry and stable weather but rough surf conditions, and so there is a chance for rip currents today. Small craft should exercise caution in moderate to rough swells.
