Nassau, Bahamas, February 9, 2017 – Now there are 39 constituencies proposed for The Bahamas as we near the 2017 General Elections and after the Boundaries Commission Report was today tabled in the House of Assembly.  Nassau will have 24, Grand Bahama remains with five and the Family Islands make up the remaining 10 constituencies as laid out in the report.

This is a one seat or constituency increase and the report also outlines a change in name of a popular constituency; Montagu will revert to a pre-independence name of ‘Freetown.’  The Prime Minister, Perry Christie agreed that the name change has to do with the ancestral history of much of the area.

The Revision of Boundaries and Re-Distribution of Seats Order 2017, some thought, missed an opportunity to provide statistics to justify changes, including average voters per constituency, but it was tabled today and will now be subject to debate by House Members.

The new seat is called St. Barnabas and Wulff Road, East Street, Thompson Boulevard, Lightbourne Avenue, Maxwell Avenue and Haven Avenue are all a part of it. New St. Barnabas has also taken 11 polling stations from neighbouring constituencies including Ft Charlotte, Centerville, Bain and Grants Town and Englerston.

It was explained that Nassau’s population grew by 6.9% and that Centerville and Bain and Grants Town constituencies have the largest number of electors – between them  are over 25,000 Bahamians eligible to vote.
