Providenciales, TCI, January 24, 2017 – The squally rain and brisk winds come ahead of a cold front and should be with us for today only says the forecast from the Bahamas Department of Meteorology. This cold front is moving directly toward us on a south easterly path and will ruin some beach plans and water sports adventures and fishing expeditions today as beach goers are being asked to watch themselves in the ocean due to rip currents and rough surf conditions.
Small boat operators are advised to stay in port; seas today swell to 16 feet for some islands in The Bahamas and Turks and Caicos chain. Winds are gusting to as high as 35mph at times and are forecast at 20 to 30 knots. The fast moving cold front has with it thunderstorms which on Sunday led to a massive power outage on Grand Bahama island in The Bahamas. We are forecast to get some of that activity here in the Turks and Caicos, with cloudy skies and rain.
The cold front should roll out of the area by later today. Gale force winds will follow the cold front, so expect strong winds again behind the chilly weather. Temperatures are forecast at 78°H for Provo, 79°H for Grand Turk and 74° and 75° degrees as the overnight low for the two main islands.
