Providenciales, 12 Nov 2015 – The Relevance of Parliament in Today’s Society was the focus when parliamentarians of the Commonwealth gathered at the at 17th Biennial Conference of presiding officers and clerks in the region.
Representing the Turks and Caicos Islands in Hamilton, Bermuda were Deputy Speaker of the House, Hon Josephine Connolly and Clerk of the House, Tracey Parker.
The dozen Caribbean countries were exposed to a string of vital discussions including: The Role of the Speaker, a talk on whether adversarial politics is sustainable in small island states, public outreach for improved understanding of the House of Assembly; the effectiveness of Parliamentary Committees and the importance of building professional capacity and establishing codes of conduct.
Hon Connolly was also a featured speaker and addressed whether or not social media has a role to play in and outside of the Chamber.
Tracey Parker said after the special convening of parliamentary clerks: “The establishment of an Association of Clerks for the region will be a tremendous benefit…as it speaks to training and networking among colleagues.”
