Turks and Caicos, March 18, 2026 – The redevelopment of South Dock has reached a major construction milestone, as the first sheet pile has been installed for the new dock, marking the start of a key expansion project at the Turks and Caicos Islands’ main cargo port.

On March 16, the Ports Authority confirmed that the first 45-foot sheet pile was placed as part of the new 410-foot by 120-foot second dock, which is expected to be completed during the remainder of 2026. The expansion is designed to increase capacity for cargo vessels and improve the efficiency of domestic and international shipping.

The milestone comes just weeks after a visit by officials from the United Kingdom Department for Transport, who conducted a comprehensive audit of port operations as part of international oversight for British Overseas Territories.

According to the Ports Authority, the UK team reviewed security procedures, access control systems, operational practices and emergency readiness to ensure the Turks and Caicos Islands remains compliant with international maritime security standards.

The review focused on the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code, which sets the framework for protecting ports involved in global trade. Compliance is critical for the territory, where nearly all food, fuel, construction materials and medical supplies arrive by sea.

Officials say the South Dock expansion and continued security audits are both essential to keeping the country’s main gateway for goods operating safely and efficiently, particularly at a time of increasing global security threats and supply chain pressures.

The Ports Authority says the new dock will strengthen the territory’s ability to handle growing cargo volumes while maintaining the security standards required for international shipping.
