Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Islands – Monday, 4 August 2025: From 27 – 30 July 2025, Environmental Health Officer Tiffany Murray and Medical Technologist Erwin Miller participated in the annual meeting of the International Association of Food Protection (IAFP) held in Cleveland, Ohio. This event offered the officers a chance to attend informative sessions on a wide range of food safety topics, connect with other professionals in the field, and explore various advanced technologies related to food safety and testing.
The officers gained valuable insights from presentations and technical sessions focused on controlling Listeria and Salmonella in ready-to-eat foods, dairy, deli meats, and poultry products, as well as risk mitigation strategies in food safety, the role of AI, and genomics/metagenomics in food safety and quality assurance.
They also benefited from discussions on:
- Food safety and spoilage issues within the frozen food supply chain
- Retail and food service safety, food safety management systems
- Laboratory detection methods, tracking, sampling, testing strategies, and
- Molecular techniques for identifying spoilage microorganisms.
The event served as a significant catalyst for collaboration between the Environmental Health Department and the National Public Health Laboratory, focusing on enhancing their joint efforts in the critical areas of water and food sampling and testing. The event aimed to educate on streamlining processes and improving of methodologies, ultimately contributing to the validation of food safety protocols.
The collaboration not only strengthens the overall framework for food safety in the region but also enhances public health outcomes by ensuring that our food and water supply is safe for consumption. By prioritising these initiatives, participation in the event underscores the commitment of both the Environmental Health Department and the National Public Health Laboratory to protect the health and well-being of the community, fostering a safer environment for all residents and visitors in the Turks and Caicos Islands.
