Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Islands – 29 July 2025 – The Ministry of Health and Human Services, through the Environmental Health Department, hereby advises all residents and business owners that the use of pallets for garbage storage is unacceptable and non-compliant with established public health standards.
Effective immediately, a 30-day notice is in place requiring the removal and replacement of pallet-based waste storage systems. All such storage methods must be replaced with secure, durable alternatives such as garbage bins with tight-fitting lids or enclosed concrete garbage houses.
This directive is issued in response to the significant environmental and public health hazards posed by pallet garbage structures, including:
- Increased attraction of rodents, stray animals, and disease-carrying insects
- Dispersal of loose waste during wind and rainfall
- Dripping, leakage, and contamination of surrounding areas
The deadline for compliance is September 1st, 2025. Failure to adhere to this directive may result in enforcement actions including formal warnings, citations, and fines, as outlined in the Public and Environmental Health Ordinance, Section 8.49.
Key provisions include:
- Residential properties in violation may be fined $100
- Commercial properties may face fines of $500
- It is the responsibility of the property owner or occupier to provide approved receptacles and ensure accessibility for waste collection services
Note: Claims of unavailability of appropriate receptacles must be verifiable to serve as a legal defense.
Residents and business operators are urged to take immediate corrective action. Non-compliant waste management practices undermine the cleanliness, safety, and health of our communities.
