The microorganism, Bacillus cereus, is responsible for the contamination and is known to cause two types of food-borne illnesses. One type is identified by the occurrence of nausea, vomiting and stomach cramps (which usually occur 1 to 6 hours after eating or drinking contaminated food). The second type is identified by the occurrence of stomach cramps and diarrhoea (which usually occurs 8 to 16 hours after eating or drinking contaminated food). It must be noted that although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term illness, exposure to high levels of Bacillus cereus can lead to death.
