May 28, 2025 — A new COVID-19 variant, NB.1.8.1, is spreading gradually across the globe, prompting health officials to remain vigilant. The subvariant, part of the Omicron lineage, was first identified in China and Hong Kong and has since appeared in the U.S., France, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, and India. While not classified as a Variant of Concern, the World Health Organization (WHO) has listed NB.1.8.1 as a “variant under monitoring” due to its potential to spread more easily and partially evade immunity.
Hong Kong has seen a notable surge in cases and hospitalizations linked to NB.1.8.1, and other subvariants like LF.7 and JN.1 are also driving case spikes in Southeast Asia. India has reported cases in over 20 states, prompting renewed public health measures.
Nepal, sharing borders with affected Indian states, has confirmed seven cases so far in 2025 and has heightened surveillance at key entry points, including its international airport.
Experts stress that while the global risk remains low, those with weakened immune systems or underlying conditions should take precautions. Public health officials recommend mask-wearing, hand hygiene, and avoiding large gatherings, especially as immunity from earlier vaccinations wanes.
