The Bahamas, May 7, 2025 – In response to the escalating fire crisis affecting several islands, Iram Lewis, the Coalition of Independents (COI) Member of Parliament for Central Grand Bahama, announced a pivotal legislative initiative aimed at transforming firefighting in The Bahamas.
Speaking at the House of Assembly on May 7, 2025, Lewis highlighted a proposal to establish an independent Bahamas National Fire and Rescue Service, a move considered crucial as destructive fires have wrought havoc across multiple islands, damaging property in the millions and displacing numerous residents. Despite the absence of loss of life, the impact of these fires has been devastating. Communities on islands such as Grand Bahama, Abaco, Eleuthera, and Exuma have faced widespread property destruction, underscoring an urgent need for an organized and robust firefighting infrastructure. Currently, reports point to a severe lack of fire trucks, equipment, and adequate manpower, complicating an already precarious situation.
The proposed bill, outlined by Lewis, aims to elevate firefighting efforts by creating an independent service with its own budget and leadership, thus enhancing operational efficiency. Key components of the initiative include the introduction of aerial firefighting capabilities, refurbishment of dormant fire stations, and equipping major inhabited islands with state-of-the-art firefighting equipment.
“This is not just talk. This is action,” asserted MP Lewis, emphasizing the responsibility of the Opposition to not only challenge but also propose viable solutions. He called for bipartisan support, urging all Members of Parliament to rally together to safeguard the Bahamian people and the environment.
As The Bahamas grapples with the reality of destructive wildfires, the proposed National Fire and Rescue Service represents a proactive step toward resilience, safety, and environmental protection. The Coalition of Independents stands firm in its commitment to foster a safer environment for all Bahamians.
