NASSAU, The Bahamas – Scores of students received first-hand information about careers in healthcare beyond the traditional professions of doctor and nurse.
Recently, the Ministry of Health and Wellness partnered with the Ministry of Education and Technical & Vocational Training, and the Health Professions Council (HPC) in staging a Health Career Fair exposing young minds to multiple opportunities in the healthcare profession.
The collaboration was aimed at encouraging more young Bahamians to pursue careers in allied health in order to reduce the country’s dependence on foreign workers, and address long-standing shortages in the healthcare system.
The inaugural Health Professions Council career fair was held on Friday, April 4, 2025 on the grounds of the Ministry of Health and Wellness, Meeting Street. Bringing remarks were: Dr. Philip Swann, Acting Director, Department of Public Health; Permanent Secretary Colin Higgs, Ministry of Health and Wellness; Eleanor Adderley, Chairman, Health Professions Council; and Michael Culmer, Assistant Director of Education.
The event allowed students dialogue with participating organizations, with a view to more long-term engagement and building capacity on a more permanent basis in the healthcare sector.
Some of the areas represented included radiographers, physiotherapists, optometrists, audiologists, dietitians, and others deemed as vital to the health system as are doctors and nurses.
Students represented C.C. Sweeting Senior High School, C.R. Walker Senior High School, Temple Christian Schools, St. John’s College, Queen’s College, Aquinas College, C.V. Bethel Senior High School, Government High School, Kingsway Academy, R.M. Bailey Senior High School, and Anatol Rodgers High School.
