Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Islands – The TCI Sports Commission is making significant strides in athlete development, implementing structured training regimens and leveraging advanced sports performance technology to enhance the strength and conditioning of national athletes. The Commission continues to take proactive steps, ensuring that athletes reach their full potential.

Training and Performance Monitoring

National athletes enrolled in the centre are currently engaged in their first full macrocycle of strength and conditioning training. This structured program breaks the training year into 4-5 week cycles, progressing through phases such as Testing, General Physical Preparation (GPP), Basic Strength, Strength & Power, Power, and Maintenance.

Athletes’ progress is meticulously tracked at the Sports Performance Centre using cutting-edge software such as ‘Output,’ which provides data-driven insights into key performance variables, including strength and power.

Athlete Progress Highlights

Male Athletes (Since August 2024)

  • 51% increase in lower body strength
  • 20% increase in upper body strength
  • 24% increase in core strength

Female Athletes (Since October 2024)

  • Over 25% increase in upper body strength
  • 33% increase in core strength

CARIFTA medalist and long-distance runner Love Joseph, who is part of the program has already experienced tangible improvements in his performance. Reflecting on his progress, Joseph stated, “The training is working—my core strength is better. During the race, I didn’t break my form, and the isolation work has helped a lot while running on uneven paths.”

Expanding Reach to National Football and Other Sports

The Sports Performance Centre has also welcomed national football athletes, who have demonstrated significant progress both in training and on the field, contributing to more victories. The structured training approach is proving to be a game-changer for TCI’s competitive edge across multiple sporting disciplines.

“Our athletes are responding well to the training both in the gym and on the track,” said Angelo Garland Head of Sports Performance. “With software that tracks athletic performance over time, we are excited to expand our reach and welcome more national teams from different sporting disciplines.”

A New Era for TCI Sports

The TCI Sports Commission remains committed to developing athletes through a strategic, science-backed approach to training. The ultimate goal of the Sports Commission is to see athletes not only improve their strength and conditioning but also translate these gains into competitive success on regional and international stages. By implementing a long-term approach to training, the Commission aims to develop well-rounded athletes who can compete at the highest levels, achieve personal bests, and bring recognition to the Turks and Caicos Islands. This coincides with our Long-Term Athlete Development Framework which was recently launched.
