PRESS RELEASE

FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF SPECIAL EDUCATION NEEDS SERVICES

Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Islands, 7th February 2025 The Special Education Needs Services (SENS) Department of the Ministry of Education, Youth, Sports and Culture, is proud to announce a calendar of activities in recognition of Down Syndrome Awareness Day (March 21st) and Autism Acceptance Month (April). These events, hosted in collaboration with the Special Education Needs Officer and the Department of Education, aim to promote awareness, inclusion, and support for individuals with Down syndrome and autism.

Building on last year’s success, where an awareness walk was held in Providenciales, this year’s initiative has expanded to include Rainbow Walks across all islands throughout April. The department encourages individuals, schools, and organizations to participate by registering through the attached flyer.

Key Activities Include:

  • Lots of Socks Day (March 21st): Wear bright, colorful, or mismatched socks to celebrate and raise awareness for Down syndrome.
  • Blue Fridays (Every Friday in April): Show support for autism acceptance by wearing blue each Friday.
  • Special Needs Sporting Events: Engaging and inclusive sporting activities for students with special needs.
  • Church Services: Bringing the community together in prayer and reflection for inclusion and awareness.

Director of Special Education, Dr. Anya Malcolm-Gibbs, highlighted the importance of these events, stating: “Expanding our awareness efforts to all islands is a step forward in ensuring every community understands the importance of inclusion and support for individuals with Down syndrome and autism. These activities not only educate but also create a sense of unity, acceptance, and celebration of differences.”

The Minister of Education, Hon. Rachel M. Taylor, added, “The Ministry of Education remains committed to fostering an inclusive society where all individuals, regardless of ability, are valued and supported. This calendar of activities is a testament to our dedication to advocacy and action.”

We invite students, parents, educators, and the wider community to participate in these activities and show their support. The full calendar of events and registration details for the Rainbow Walks are attached. Get Involved!
