FROM THE MINISTRY OF EDUCATION, YOUTH, SPORTS AND CULTURE

Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Islands 6TH March 2025 The Special Education Needs (SENS) Department of the Ministry of Education, Youth, Sports and Culture, is proud to announce the return of its Annual Audiology Assessments, offering hearing screenings and hearing aid services to children and adults across the islands. This initiative, scheduled for March 31st to April 4th, is part of the department’s Key Performance Strategy (KPS) to improve access to essential services for individuals with hearing impairments. This initiative is made possible through the department’s partnership with Hearing the Call through the One World Foundation, a collaboration that has been instrumental in expanding access to hearing healthcare in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Over the past year, the department successfully completed 173 audiology screenings across the islands, ensuring that children and adults received the necessary evaluations and interventions. This year, the team will once again visit every island to conduct screenings for students and will extend the service to adults, encouraging them to register.

Director of Special Education, Dr. Anya Malcolm-Gibbs emphasized the importance of early detection, stating: “Hearing plays a vital role in communication, learning, and overall development. By providing access to screenings and hearing aids, we are ensuring that no child or adult is left behind due to an undiagnosed hearing impairment. This initiative is a testament to our commitment to inclusive education and equal opportunities for all.”

Minister of Education, Hon. Rachel M. Taylor, also expressed support for the initiative, adding:
“The government remains committed to improving access to essential services for our people. Through these annual assessments, we are taking proactive steps to address hearing challenges and ensure that both children and adults receive the support they need to thrive in school, work, and daily life.”

This initiative is a crucial step toward ensuring that individuals with hearing difficulties receive timely support, whether through early intervention or the provision of hearing aids.
