Location: Turks and Caicos Islands

Incident Details:

Javon Green, 29, was arrested on the night of October 30, 2024, at Dock Yard Hill, Providenciales. He is accused of possessing:

  • A loaded 9mm handgun with 11 rounds of ammunition
  • 28 grams of marijuana

Court Proceedings:

Green appeared before the Honourable Chief Magistrate Mr. Jolyon Hatmin on November 6, 2024. He has been remanded to the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation until January 10, 2025, for a sufficiency hearing.

Defense Argument:

  • Green’s defense counsel, Mrs. Leanna Brooks Campbell, requested that the marijuana charge remain in the Magistrate’s Court due to its small quantity.
  • However, Chief Magistrate Hatmin ruled that, under the relevant ordinance, charges involving related incidents of guns, ammunition, and drugs must be sent together to the Supreme Court.

Prosecution:

  • The senior public prosecutor, Ms. Tassja Mitchell, was not asked to address the court regarding the defense’s application.

Next Steps:

Green remains in custody pending his sufficiency hearing in January 2025.
