Turks and Caicos to Host a Landmark Week of Sporting Excellence with CANOC General Assembly, Commonwealth Games Meetings, and Inaugural CANOC Sports Awards

Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Islands – The Turks and Caicos Islands will take center stage as the Caribbean’s sporting elite gather for a historic week of events from October 14th to 19th, 2024. This unprecedented occasion will mark the first time the Turks and Caicos Islands hosts the Caribbean Association of National Olympic Committees (CANOC) General Assembly, the Commonwealth Games Federation annual meetings and workshops, and the highly anticipated inaugural CANOC Sports Awards. Over 100 participants, including Caribbean sports stars, administrators, and officials, will converge on Providenciales to celebrate sporting excellence and chart the future of Caribbean sports.

Speaking on the significance of this momentous week, Mr. Godfrey Been, President of the Turks and Caicos Islands Commonwealth Games Association, expressed his pride, “It is an honour for the Turks and Caicos Islands to host the inaugural CANOC Sports Awards and these prestigious events. This not only celebrates the remarkable achievements of our region’s athletes and sports leaders but also strengthens the bond of unity that sports fosters across the Caribbean. We are proud to play a pivotal role in recognizing the excellence that transcends our sporting communities and showcases the Caribbean on the global sporting stage.”

The week will kick off with the Commonwealth Games Federation’s annual meetings and IOC Sustainability workshops and CANOC’s 22nd General Assembly, both taking place for the first time in Turks and Caicos. These meetings will bring together key decision-makers from across the Caribbean and the Commonwealth to discuss strategies that ensure the region remains competitive and innovative on the global stage.

Ms. Edith Cox, Vice President of the Turks and Caicos Islands Commonwealth Games Association, highlighted the importance of these gatherings, “This is a pivotal moment for Caribbean sports, and hosting these meetings will strengthen the future of sports in our country and across the region. We’re thrilled to welcome so many influential leaders to our beautiful shores.”

The week will culminate with the star-studded Inaugural CANOC Sports Awards on October 19th, 2024, at the luxurious Beaches Turks & Caicos Resort Villages and Spa. With a theme of “Celebrating Caribbean Sporting Excellence”, this black-tie affair will honour the Caribbean’s finest athletes, teams, administrators, and sports organizations, alongside the prestigious IOC Sustainability Awards. The Awards, featuring nominees like Olympic gold medalists and regional champions, will celebrate the incredible achievements of Caribbean athletes who have shone on the international stage.

Among the nominees for Caribbean Sports Personality of the Year are renowned athletes such as Julien Alfred (Saint Lucia, Athletics) and Kyron McMaster (British Virgin Islands, Athletics). Other awards will include the Caribbean Breakthrough AwardCaribbean Distinguished Service AwardCaribbean Lifetime Achievement Award, and the Caribbean Sponsor of the Year Award. Turks and Caicos’ Sonia Fulford-Missick and Galmo Williams are amongst those nominated.

Hosting these prestigious events not only solidifies the Turks and Caicos Islands as a premier destination for world-class events but also places the Caribbean’s sporting achievements in the global spotlight.
