Providenciales, Turks & Caicos Islands 22nd October 2024 – The Departments of Culture and Heritage and the Library Services participated in the Endangered Archives Programme (EAP) Collection Care Workshop, held at the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona Campus, Jamaica, from October 9-11, 2024.
Mrs. Kecha Delusma-Chase, Library Assistant, and Ms. Trazel Prospere, Senior Cultural Officer, represented the Turks and Caicos Islands at this strategic training session. This capacity-building initiative equips both departments with specialized skills to collectively advance the national archival and digitization project, ensuring the long-term preservation and accessibility of the islands’ cultural heritage.
The workshop focused on best practices in handling, storing, and displaying historical artifacts, archival systems, environmental monitoring, cleaning and restoration methods, and integrated pest management strategies.
According to the Honourable Rachel Taylor, Minister of Education, Youth, Sports & Culture, “This training marks a significant milestone in our efforts to safeguard the rich cultural heritage of the Turks and Caicos Islands. By investing in our staff and infrastructure, we ensure the preservation of our history for future generations.”
The national archival project aims to create a comprehensive digital archive of historical records and artifacts, providing secure access to fragile documents, photographs, maps, and cultural materials. This collaborative initiative streamlines efforts and resources between the Department of Culture and Heritage and the Library Services, demonstrating the government’s commitment to preserving the islands’ historical narrative.
