Turks and Caicos, October 25, 2024 – The recent approved of the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI) Draft Constitution (Amendment) Order 2024, will ensure that the legislative processes reflect the will of the people, and the changes signify progress and more importantly align with the evolving identity of authority.
Making the assertions during the debate in the House of Assembly, Deputy Premier and Minister for Physical Planning and Infrastructure Development, Jamell Robinson, said he believed that “they are a clarion call for progress, accountability and empowerment.
“We are on the brink of transformative democracy, one that redefine the way we govern and elevate the voices of our citizens, and while some may view these proposed amendments as merely legal formalities,” they are crucial rules for moving forward, he said.
Adding that the amendments represent a commitment to adapting to foundational principles to meet the evolving needs of the society., the Deputy Premier said, while stating that the amendments are not a departure from “our heritage,” as they are an affirmation of providing a clear path of progress for those after “us to walk with pride and with purpose.
“These changes are about evolution, as we navigate an increasingly complex world, our institutions must reflect our commitment to progress and adaptability. The name ‘House of Assembly’ has served us well, but it is time to evolve. The term “Parliament” signifies a legislative body that is not only a space for debate but also a hub for collaboration, and the delivery of effective governance.,” he told the House.
He further added that the change is about unity, and the concept of Parliament transcending divisions and brings together diverse voices under one roof, and speaks to the idea that, regardless of “our differing opinions and backgrounds, we are all here with a common purpose: to serve the people. By adopting this name, we send a message of solidarity and collective responsibility to our citizens,” he told his audience.
The Deputy Premier underscored that that they were not only enacting regulations, but establishing frameworks that govern the lives of citizens, and each piece of legislation that they passed, has the power to shape “our society, to foster equity, and to promote the well-being of our communities,” he said
