KARLANSIA MILLS APPOINTED AS MEDICAL OFFICER

Turks and Caicos, October 3, 2024 – The Office of the Deputy Governor is proud to announce the appointment of Dr. Karlansia Mills to the position of Medical Officer within the Ministry of Health and Human Services.

Dr. Mills is a highly qualified professional, holding a Bachelor’s Degree in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Hull, alongside a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree from The University of the West Indies, St. Augustine. Her educational journey has been marked by a strong foundation in both biomedical research and clinical practice. She completed her internship at St. Ann’s Bay Hospital in Jamaica, where she enriched her knowledge and skills by working across various specialties, gaining firsthand experience in patient care, diagnostics, and treatment protocols.

In 2020, Dr. Mills made a commendable return to the Turks and Caicos Islands, where she took on a pivotal role in the private sector, specializing in family medicine. Beyond her practice, she contributed significantly to public health efforts as a dedicated member of the Ministry of Health’s COVID-19 response team, showcasing her commitment to the health and safety of the community during challenging times.

In 2022, Dr. Mills furthered her career in the United Kingdom, gaining invaluable experience in various hospitals, specifically in the field of General Medicine. She worked rigorously in gastroenterology and oncology wards, engaging in every stage of patient care, from admission in emergency departments to coordinated discharge planning. Through her efforts, she not only deepened her clinical knowledge but also expanded her practical expertise. Her commitment to continuous learning led her to earn several continuing medical certifications and to present insightful research on “Hyperglycemia in Steroid Use on an Oncology Ward” at the PRIME Medics Conference held in Birmingham, UK, in 2023.

Reflecting on her new role, Dr. Mills expressed her heartfelt appreciation, stating, “I am grateful to be appointed as a Medical Officer within the Primary Health Care Department. I have a passion for medicine, especially chronic disease management and oncology, and I am blessed to now be able to provide medical care to the communities that have helped raise me. I will work to the best of my ability to improve primary care in the communities that I serve. Thanks again for the opportunity.”
