Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Islands October 30th 2024 – The Department of Agriculture is excited to announce its partnership with the Sandals Foundation-Beaches Turks and Caicos Resort to bring Phase 2 of the Composting Training Program to communities across the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI). This initiative will provide 70 composting tumblers to individuals who complete the program, equipping residents with the knowledge and tools to turn organic waste into nutrient-rich soil, reduce waste, and contribute to a more sustainable environment.
Phase 2 of the composting training has already seen successful sessions in North Caicos on October 10th and in Grand Turk on October 29th. Led by Mario Smith and Romario Cumberbatch from the Department of Agriculture, these training sessions have been well-received by participants, who praised the information.
Composting plays a vital role in creating a sustainable environment by reducing waste, minimizing the need for chemical fertilizers, and enriching the soil with valuable nutrients. It’s an easy and effective way to recycle organic materials, turning kitchen scraps and garden clippings into compost that can be used in home gardens to promote healthy plant growth. By adopting composting practices, residents can support local agriculture, reduce landfill contributions, and help to improve soil health across TCI.
As part of the program’s rollout, residents can look forward to upcoming training sessions scheduled for South Caicos next week, followed by Providenciales shortly after. Interested individuals are encouraged to watch for advertisements and sign up early. Those who complete the training will not only gain valuable skills but also receive a composting tumbler to begin their own composting journey.
Through this partnership and other initiatives, the Department of Agriculture is committed to promoting local food production and enhancing food security within TCI. Residents are encouraged to participate in these activities to make meaningful contributions towards a sustainable and food-secure future.
