PRESS RELEASE

FROM THE Department of Gender Affairs

Grand Turk, Turks and Caicos Islands 29th October 2024 – The Department of Gender Affairs, within the Ministry of Home Affairs, collaborated with the Grand Turk Church of God of Prophecy to host a moving Domestic Violence Awareness Service on Sunday, October 13th, 2024. The service brought together community members, church leaders, and government officials to shine a light on the pervasive issue of domestic violence and offer support to those affected.

The service featured a reading of Psalm 46 by Carolyn Dickenson, Director of the Department of Gender Affairs, and greetings from the Honourable Otis Morris, Minister for Home Affairs, Transportation, Broadcasting and the Telecommunication Commission. Associate Pastor Rev. Michael Williams delivered a powerful sermon under the theme “Stop the Pain, Break the Chain: Silence Hides Violence.”

Mrs. Dickenson expressed heartfelt thanks to the church for hosting the service and to all who attended. She emphasized that domestic violence is a community issue that requires everyone’s attention and action. Hon. Morris addressed those suffering in silence, assuring them that help is available and they are not alone. He also called upon the church to join the fight against domestic violence, reminding the congregation that the church should be a sanctuary where all feel safe and loved.

The service highlighted the alarming rise of domestic violence in Turks and Caicos and the importance of breaking the silence that often surrounds it. As Associate Pastor Williams stated, “Silence hides violence.” The community was urged to stand together against domestic violence, to support victims, and to create a society where no one suffers in fear and silence.

The Domestic Violence Awareness Service was a powerful reminder that ending domestic violence requires the collective efforts of the community, church, and the government. It served as a call to action for all to break the silence, extend support to those affected, and work towards a future where every home and relationship is free from violence.
