Erislandy Álvarez is a Cuban boxer. He qualified the 2024 Summer Olympics on the very same day that his grandmother passed away. Media reports recount the story and retrace the steps of the 24 year old, who upon winning gold in Paris looked to the heavens, and his Grandma for a dedication as astounding as it was touching.
“I wanted to dedicate this to my grandma, may she rest in peace,” Alvarez told Olympics.com after pointing to the sky duringthe Medal Ceremony. “She died the day I qualified in Thailand. The good thing is that we promised her that we would qualify and make it, and now we have and we dedicated this to her.”
Cuba was the most successful Caribbean country at the 2024 Olympics, securing nine medals; two gold, one silver and six bronze.
