#TurksandCaicos, August 7, 2024 – She was placed on remand until October 4, 2024. That date of her remand is also the date of her Sufficiency Hearing in the Supreme Court.
She will remain in custody until an application for her release on bail is made before the Supreme Court. Her attorney, senior defense counsel, Mr. Ashwood Forbes and junior assistant Ms. Seshedi Handfield is expected to file a Supreme Court bail application shortly.
The American woman is the third visitor to the Islands to face the Magistrate’s, Court on ammunition charges in less than week in Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Islands. Her court appearance was Tuesday August 6.
The single charge was read to 24 year old TIANA RENAY JONES by the learned Resident Magistrate, her honor Mrs. Oreika Selver-Gardiner alleging that she had with her two different rounds ammunition on Thursday August 1st, 2024 at the Howard Hamilton International Airport.
She allegedly possessed a 7.62 ammo of which is used in high-powered assault rifles such as an AK47 and/or a Draco firearms.
The office of the Director of Public Prosecution was represented by Mr. Clement Joseph, Principal Public Prosecutor and senior public prosecutor Mrs. Nayasha Hatmin.
Before court commenced, as we were sitting waiting on the Hon Resident Magistrate, the accused young lady who was released on police bail.
Friday of last week (August 2) to return back to police station this morning was casually speaking to everyone in court before the Magistrate came in. She was asked a number of questions and answered them very openly. She was asked if she knew what type of gun the 7.62 bullet is used in, and with confidence and quick intelligence, she replied “yes” a Draco, and in AK47. The young lady appears and sounds to be very knowledgeable in the use of firearm in her home state.
Jones, the accused, said, “You only have to be of age with a registered ID in the state of Georgia to own or possess a firearm.”
