Update on Fire at Providenciales Landfill Site

Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Islands – Monday, 8 July 2024:  On Saturday, 7^th July 2024, at 12:10 am, the Environmental Health Department (EHD) was informed of a fire at the Providenciales landfill. The fire was identified by the landfill contractor, TCI Green Ecological. The fire is located on the east side of the landfill on the edge of the active cell.

The Acting Minister of Health, Honourable Kyle Knowles, and the Environmental Health Department advises residents of Providenciales, especially those living in the Wheeland Phase 2 area, that the Department and TCI Green Ecological are urgently addressing the fire at the disposal site with assistance from all stakeholders. As of this press release, the fire is approximately 60% contained. Residents are reminded to keep doors and windows closed to avoid potential smoke exposure while efforts to control the fire continue.
