Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Islands, 28th July 2024 – The Department of Disaster Management and Emergencies (DDME) wishes to inform the residents of the Turks and Caicos Islands that we are actively monitoring the Tropical Wave in the Atlantic Basin. DDME continues to engage with and receive alerts from the Turks and Caicos Islands National Weather Service (TCI NWS) and the Bahamas Department of Meteorology.

Information provided indicates that an area of disturbed weather over the Central Tropical Atlantic will interact with an approaching tropical wave, there is a medium 40% chance of development as the system continues a west-northwestward trek towards the Eastern Caribbean, early to the middle of the upcoming week.

DDME takes this opportunity to remind the Residents of the Turks and Caicos Islands that the peak of the Atlantic Hurricane season is quickly approaching, generally known to be the most active period; as such residents should continue their preparation of homes, offices and businesses. DDME also encourages the updating of your family emergency plans, insurance policies and emergency food/inventory supplies. The season is predicted to be a very active season due to warmer than usual ocean temperatures and changes in environmental conditions from El Nino to La Nina, which reduces wind shear and encourages hurricane development.

The 2024 Atlantic Basin Hurricane Season began on Saturday, 01 June, 2024, and ends on Saturday, 30 November, 2024. The season has already seen three (3) named storms, with one being a rapidly intensifying Hurricane (Beryl) at a Category 5. Let us continue to remain vigilant and prepared.

Remember: It only takes one!
