#TurksandCaicos, June 7, 2024 – In response to the recent surge in rainfall across the Turks and Caicos Islands, the Environmental Health Department is issuing a public health advisory to ensure the safety and well-being of our community members.

The increased rainfall has the potential to pose various health and safety risks, including flooding, waterborne diseases, and other related hazards. As part of our commitment to public health and safety, we urge residents to take the following precautions:

  1. Stay Informed: Stay tuned to the radio and television for the latest information and updates on the situation.
  2. Flood Preparedness: Identify safe evacuation routes and higher ground for possible flooding. If you live in flood-prone areas, consider installing sandbags around your property and moving valuable belongings to higher floors.
  3. Avoid Driving in Flooded Areas: Refrain from driving into flood-prone areas to ensure personal safety.
  4. Water Safety: Beware of floodwaters, which may be contaminated by oil, gasoline, or raw sewage. Refrain from allowing children to play in these areas.
  5. Mosquito Prevention: Increased rainfall can create breeding grounds for mosquitoes. To prevent mosquito bites, use EPA-approved insect repellents, wear long sleeves and pants, and ensure that window screens are intact.
  6. Safe Drinking Water: Ensure the safety of your drinking water by using only safe water sources. Boil water if you are unsure about its purity, and avoid consuming water from potentially contaminated sources.
  7. Food Safety:
    1. Discard any food items contaminated by floodwater.
    2. Store food supplies in high and dry places.
    3. Clean and sanitise sealed and canned items before opening.
    4. Use double plastic bags to store garbage.
  8. Emergency Preparedness: Prepare an emergency kit with essential supplies, including non-perishable food, water, medications, and important documents. This kit should be easily accessible in case of evacuation.
  9. Cooperation with Emergency Workers: Assist emergency workers by staying off the roads and out of their way in flooded areas.
  10. Community Support: Check on neighbours, particularly those who may be vulnerable, such as the elderly or individuals with special needs. Offer assistance to those who may require help with evacuation or other emergency measures.

The Environmental Health Department remains committed to the health and safety of our community. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as needed.
